CSIR-UGC-NET (Life Science)

This exam is held twice in a year (June and December). And forms come in August-September and February-March of the same year.

For M.Sc. Previous students it is advised that they should start preparing from April if they want to appear in December.

How to Crack Examination Pattern

Paper I (Objective)
Section A: Include general scientific aptitude in the field of biology, computers, physics, mathematics, chemistry and Earth sciences. Usually 6-7 questions from each part, making total 40 questions out of which only 25 are to be attempted the level of studies should be just 10th & 11th level in all these subjects.

Section B: 100 questions from entirely from life sciences out of which only 75 are to be attempted. You should follow “something about everything strategy” to qualify this section.

Usually it Contain
· 15 questions from systematic
· 10 questions from chemistry and statistics
· 15 questions from classical genetics
· 15 questions from ecology and biodiversity
· 15 questions from biochemistry and molecular biology
· 15 questions from cell biology, microbiology and immunology
· 15 questions from animal and plant physiology

Paper II (Subjective)
Out of 39-42 questions (13 units of syllabus) 16 questions are to be attempted.

Compulsory Question No. 1 (20 Marks)
This question usually cover chemistry and instrumentation used in biology. In chemistry most often pH, Kinetics, Solutions, Thermodynamics, Equilibrium related questions are asked while in Biology, Microscopy, Spectroscopy, Chromatography, Centrifugation, Electrophoresis and biostatics related questions are asked.

Next 15 Questions you will have to choose from remaining questions.

Hot Tips for Subjective Exam:
1. You have only one page to write an answer whether it is single part or in many parts.
2. Scan the whole question paper for 10 minutes for choosing questions.
3. Don’t forget to write the question number at header of the page.
4. In Ist Round: Choose those questions first which are least time consuming and you can solve them completely.
5. In IInd Round: Choose those questions, which has straight answers like cramming, or calculation based questions.
6. In IIIrd Round: Choose those questions, which have some logical and analytical approach.
7. In Final Round: Choose those questions, which are descriptive and demanding some diagram.

While Writing the Answers
Ø Don’t write much and question of 4 marks require hardly 5-6 line answer.
Ø Try to make schematic answer by using representative diagrams for any descriptive question
Ø Try to make chains and links in your answers

Time Management
Since available Time is 2 Hours 10 Minutes
Means for 1st Question = 10 Minutes and
Next 15 Questions = 8 Minutes/Question = 120 minutes.

Which subjects should be chosen during preparation
Instrumentation/Biophysics
This is always very useful as many question are indirect and involving application and analysis of instruments/Techniques. This covers at least 2-3 questions.

Biochemistry
At least 2-3 questions come from this part one is from protein and enzyme kinetics and one is from metabolism or thermodynamics.

Cell Biology and Immunology
This part cover at least 4 questions from Membrane and Functioning, Cell signaling, Cytoskeleton and Nerve, Antibody, Antigen antibody interactions, MHC, Complement etc. & one question (surely) from Cancer Biology.

Molecular Biology
Usually straight question related with DNA structure, replication and transcription and translation. This covers at least 2-3 questions.

Recombinant DNA Technology
Usually any descriptive question from applied part of plant biotechnology or Animal Biotechnology.

Plant Physiology
Usually 1 Question from Photosynthesis or Plant Hormones.

Animal Physiology
Usually 1 Question from mainly Endocrinology and Heart Physiology.

Classical Botany
Usually one straight question from Economic Botany and Classification of lower plants.

Biostatistics
Usually 2 questions comes from this field.
Always Prepare your area of specialization because you can attempt at least 2-3 questions from that part also.

How many questions to be attempted in CSIR-UGC-NET?
In Objective Part: At least 70-75% marks required to qualify screening which means at least 15-20 questions in section A plus 55-65 in section B should be correct.

In Subjective Part:
8-10 correct answers should be attempted to qualify NET (LS)
12-14 correct answers should be attempted to qualify JRF
14-16 correct answers should be attempted to get call for SPM

GATE (Life Science)

Examination held on Second Sunday of February of every year and Forms come in September/October every year.

Part I: Compulsory Chemistry
This covers chemistry up to B.Sc. level and have fix pattern like some questions from Thermodynamics, Electrochemistry, Aromatic reaction mechanism etc.

Part II: Optional Paper
In Optionals you are to choose any two papers from the following: Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology.

Some Tips:
· It is more fruitful to choose Biochemistry as one subject and second one you can choose any of your interest, because Biochemistry syllabus comprise Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Immunology and molecular Biology and all these questions are basic level but analytical.
· Number of questions required to Qualify GATE depends on your performance in Chemistry, As this is “Screening”.
· In optional it is safe to attempt around 25 in each.

DBT-JRF
This Examination held in April of every year and Forms comes in January-February.

Paper I: Consist 50 Questions which cover Basic Physics, Chemistry and General Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology, Microbiology etc.

Paper II: Consist 200 questions of which 50 has to be attempted this paper is quite difficult as it contain questions from hardcore Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry and other advance topics.

ICMR-JRF
This Examination held in July of every year and Forms come in March.

Section A: Comprise 50 questions from Scientific aptitude, General Science and general Knowledge.

Section B: Comprise 100 questions from Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Biophysics and Recombinant DNA etc.

Section C: This is Social Science Students.

· The Life Science students have to score 55% marks 950% for SC/ST) for Top 100 ranks.

· Every year 80 students from Life Science and 20 students from Social Sciences are awarded ICMR JRF.

· If somebody do not join any Institute within six months of awarding JRF this will be awarded to next student in the waiting list of 100 students.
